If we accept that God loves everyone, because everyone was made in God’s image and is valued by him, that will profoundly affect how we think about our fellow human beings.  If every single person inherently has value, they will therefor deserve some level of my respect.  That applies not only to family and friends, but to everyone: to totally dependent infants, to severely handicapped individuals, to teen rebels, to gang members, even to enemies in war. Everyone.  We (sometimes) need to really try hard see that image of God in some individuals.  Sometimes we fail, and just can’t see it.  But it’s there.  God made them with it. Thought question: What it be like if everyone you knew regarded everyone they knew as a bearer of God's image?
